Jain Protest Over Santhara Verdict Rekindles Right to Die Debate

Jain Protest Over Santhara Verdict Rekindles Right to Die Debate

The judgement was passed on August 10 following a petition filed in 2006.

Jaipur:  The Jain community in Jaipur are protesting against an order by the Rajasthan High Court that declared the religious practice of Santhara, also known as Sallekhana as illegal and held that any person supporting the practice would be prosecuted for abetment of suicide.

A person, after taking a vow of Santhara, stops eating and drinking water till death. The Jain community says that prohibiting the practice interferes with their freedom of religion as a minority group.

The judgement was passed on August 10 following a petition filed in 2006 that had triggered a huge debate about on whether people have the right to choose to die. The order has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The Jain community contends that taking the vow of Santhara requires a tremendous amount of willpower, and to live without food and water can only be done by those people who are ‘highly evolved’.
