A meeting at the director general of police (DGP) office on Thursday in the Uttar Pradesh capital discussed security issues with regard to PM Modi’s visit.
While district officials did not divulge much, a senior home department official confirmed the proposed programme of the prime minister and said “security arrangements as per protocol and established norms” have been initiated.
However, the minute-to-minute programme of the prime minister was not yet clear.
Officials of the intelligence department were coordinating with the district authorities on the security plan, the home department official said.
PM Modi’s visit to his Lok Sabha constituency has been shelved three times in the past.
Once it was due to the impending Hudhud cyclone, then due to heavy rain and the last event was cancelled after a labourer was electrocuted at the ground where PM Modi was supposed to address a rally.
He last visited Varanasi in December 2014.
