The man who threw the acid at her as she was headed to work, was found dead hours later.
The police say that after he attacked Renu Shahu, 21, the man was beaten up by a mob. He allegedly then stabbed himself.
Ms Shahu is being treated for 50 per cent burns.
Sanjay Patil was her neighbor, the police said, and had been stalking her for months.
This morning, Ms Sahu, on her way to work, realized she was being followed.
She reportedly went to one police station but was asked to go to another to file her complaint. On the way, Sanjay Patil allegedly stalked her and threw acid on her.
Ms Renu Sahu’s family alleges that Sanjay had been harassing them and their daughter for months.
“We had known Sanjay for years he was our neighbour. Lately, he had started harassing us and my daughter. This morning he attacked my daughter. Her condition is serious,” said Mamata Sahu, her mother.
The police admitted that the family had registered a complaint when Sanjay had attacked them in their house recently. “A few days ago Renu’s family had registered an FIR against Sanjay Patil for barging into their house and beating them up. And today he attacked the girl with acid. By-standers say that the accused then stabbed himself to death,” Arvind Saxena, a senior police officer, told media.
